In 1988, Sean McGuirk ‘88 became Iona College’s first-ever cross country All-American. One of the most decorated runners in program history, McGuirk would go on to achieve a remarkable career.
McGuirk was the 1988 MAAC Men’s Cross County Champion. At the time, he was the eighth person in program history to run a sub-25 minute 8,000-meter time at Van Cortlandt Park.
Equally successful on the indoor track, McGuirk accomplished several impressive feats. He finished his Iona career with the fourth fastest indoor 3,000-meter time of 8:09.60, which still ranks among the Top 25 at Iona. He also holds the eighth fastest indoor mile, the 10th fastest 1,500-meter and also had Top 20 time in the indoor 1,000-meter event.
On the outdoor track, McGuirk finished his Iona career with the third fastest outdoor three-mile time which was also a freshman record. He also recorded the fourth fastest outdoor two-mile time, fifth fastest 5,000-meter time and held a Top 10 time in the outdoor 1,500-meter event.
