Arrigoni Hall of Fame
Steve Broege is inducted into the Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame as the greatest left-handed pitcher in Iona College baseball history.
Broege teamed with Hall of Famer Dennis Leonard to form the most feared lefty-righty pitching combination in the country during the 1971 season. The 1971 team is generally regarded as the best team in Iona history, having posted 17 straight wins and a 19-7 record on the way to capturing the Metropolitan Conference title. Broege went on to start eight games in ’71, posting a 7-1 record with six complete games and a 1.46 earned run average. He pitched 74 innings, striking out 90 batters and allowing only 35 walks. Following the season he was honored as the Pitcher of the Year in the Metropolitan Conference.
Steve’s dominant performance in 1971 re-wrote the Iona baseball record books. His seven wins, 74 innings pitched, and 90 strikeouts are still unsurpassed in the history of Iona baseball.
Broege played four years of professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals organization before a ruptured disk forced him to retire. At the time of his injury, Broege was leading the Texas League in wins, earned run average, and strikeouts for St. Louis’ Triple-A team in Little Rock, Arkansas.
At the time of his induction, Steve lived with his wife, Jerilyn, and their three children in Pleasantville, NY.
