Austin represented Iona College at two NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in 1989 and 1990. He earned All-American honors in 1989, after placing 10th at the national championship meet held at Brigham Young University.

He was a four-time All-East selection at the IC4A Championships- the oldest continuous track meet in America. During his career, Austin never finished lower than third place, while capturing three IC4A javelin titles, in 1989, 1990, and 1991. He is one of just two Iona athletes to capture three individual crowns at the prestigious event.
