Although he stood just 6’3”, John O’Hagan was considered one of the finest “big men” in metropolitan collegiate basketball. A four-year starter for the Gaels between 1946-50, O’Hagan was the first Iona player to reach the coveted 1,000 point plateau.
The captain of the 1949-50 Gaels, O’Hagan helped lead the squad to a 22-4 record, including their first ever visit to the National Catholic Invitational Tournament. It was in the semifinal round of that NCIT that O’Hagan reached the milestone, and went on to finish with a career total of 1,005 points.
The All-Catholic College Metro Team selection averaged better than 14 points per game during his senior year as well as eight rebounds per outing. He scored a career-high 30 points versus Texas Wesleyan during his final collegiate season.
Following his graduation from Iona with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1950, O’Hagan was selected in the seventh round of the NBA draft by the Washington Capitols.
