Arrigoni Hall of Fame
Patrick “Packie” Mulvany ’93 was a standout performer for the Iona University cross country and track & field programs in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.
A pioneer for the Gaels’ success in cross country, Mulvany was a three-time MAAC individual champion in 1990, 1991 and 1992, and helped lead Iona to its first two team titles in 1991 and 1992 that began the stretch of 33 consecutive at the time of his induction. Mulvany was the second of eight Maroon & Gold harriers to win multiple individual titles and the first to win three. Only one other athlete in program history has won more than two individual titles since Mulvany.
On the indoor track, Mulvany set the standard in the mile run, posting a school record time of 4:02.48 in 1991 at Boston University that stood for 15 years. The time is 10th fastest on the program’s performance list at the time of Mulvany’s induction.
Outdoors, Mulvany’s 1,500-meter time still ranks No. 13 at Iona and was the second fastest 1,500 at the time with a 3:45.30. He also ran the 10th fastest outdoor 800-meter time of 1:52.45, which remains in the top 20 in program history. In 1991, Mulvany’s 3,000-meter steeplechase performance (9:07.56) ranked No. 5, still a top 15 effort at the time of his induction.
Overall, Mulvany qualified for five NCAA Championships throughout his career, twice in cross country and three times in the indoor mile. He was honored with the 1993 Joseph O’Connell Award, presented annually to the athletic department’s most outstanding male and female senior student-athletes.
Mulvany graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies in 1993 and a Master of Science in Teaching degree in 2002.
