Iona head basketball coach, 1975-1980, Athletic Director, 1977-80. Taught Iona to “Dare to Dream”; recruited some of Iona’s best talent ever and the results showed: 1979-80 team was 29-5, ECAC champs, beat eventual national champion Louisville (77-60) in front of sold out Madison Square Garden and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Georgetown 74-71. Coached Iona to a record of 95-46 (.674) record.

After leaving Iona, Coach “V” won the 1983 NCAA National Championship as the head coach of NC State and went on to an award winning career as a television broadcaster with ABC and ESPN.

Jim Valvano died of cancer at the age of 47 in 1993.
