1907-1982
For over 40 years, Dr. Delmar V. Hughes served Iona College, caring for the College athletics teams as well as the Christian Brothers Community.
A New Rochelle native, “Doc” Hughes practiced medicine in his hometown for 44 years. A graduate of Iona Prep and Holy Cross, he received his medical degree from Georgetown University in 1935. He competed in tennis and basketball throughout his high school and college years and won the Duneen Trophy at Holy Cross as the team’s Most Valuable Player. He captained the Tennis team at Holy Cross his senior year.
In 1961, Iona College bestowed upon him the Pro Operis Award in recognition of 20 years of devoted service to the interests and advancement of the College. He received an honorary degree from Iona College in 1973.
During World War II, he received the Bronze Star while serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy assigned to duty as a physician in the South Pacific.
